As a young woman, Corina leaves her Mexican family in Chicago to pursue her dream of becoming a writer in the cafés of Paris. Instead, she struggles with financial worries in the City of Light or stands in line with other immigrants to call home from a broken payphone. Nevertheless, the months she spends befriending begging street performers in the Métro, sleeping in a garret the size of a broom closet, or dancing tango at illegal parties, gain a lasting brilliance through her intense friendships with Martita and Paola. Over the years, the three women scatter across three continents, losing sight of each other and fading from memory—until a rediscovered letter brings back the days in Paris with breathtaking immediacy.
