Why fairy tales are so important for children. Fairy tales are loved by some for their magical power and poetry, while others view them with skepticism. The significance they can and should have in childhood opens up a rich field of discussion for parents and educators. Fairy tales have a long tradition in various cultures and are often the first literary form that many children encounter. Initially, they are read aloud, told, or acted out for the child, allowing them to be experienced and resonate strongly within the specific communication context. Similar to picture books, fairy tales are referred to as threshold literature because they help prepare for later independent reading. Through listening and storytelling, they create a space for imagination: children, for example, experience the magical power of language in riddles, rhymes, and sayings.
