Product details

Student research project from the year 2009 in the subject area German Studies - Genres, grade: 13 points, University of Kassel, language: German, abstract: Kabale und Liebe is the only bourgeois tragedy written by Schiller. Many pages have been written in literature about the main characters Luise Miller and Ferdinand von Walther as well as the secondary characters Wurm and Luise's father, the town musician Miller. Less noted and less often found in literature, on the other hand, is the figure of Lady Milford. The appearance, or rather the encounter, of Milford with Luise in Act 4, Scene 7 has even been described as ¿implausible and thus as a dramaturgical weakness¿ on Schiller's part. In Lady Milford, Schiller has created an ambivalent character who combines both positive and negative qualities. These character traits clearly come into conflict with each other in the course of the play. In my work, I will first discuss the central aspects of the bourgeois tragedy. Lessing, in particular, established these in his Hamburg Dramaturgy. I then describe in more detail Lessing's remarks on character design in drama and the causal connection he demanded between characters and events. I then relate this to Lady Milford. Furthermore, I discuss the intentions that Schiller might have had in creating Milford. The aim of the work is to show the significance of the character Lady Milford in the overall dramatic context.
