Product details

The adventure and discovery novels of the French writer Jules Verne (1828-1905) are still widely read today and have often been made into films. In books like 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth', '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' and 'Journey to the Moon', he anticipates numerous technical developments. Verne himself travelled a lot. In June 1881, he crossed Schleswig-Holstein with his steam yacht. His brother Paul, who took part in this journey from France to Copenhagen, wrote an account of this trip. The descriptions of the passage from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea through the Eider and the old Eider Canal, at that time an admired engineering feat, as well as the stays in Tönning, Rendsburg and Kiel form a special focus. On the 100th anniversary of Jules Verne's death in March 2005, Frank Trende rediscovered the travelogue and contributed background information on Jules Verne, the old Eider Canal and the literary impact of Verne's journey on Arno Schmidt (1914-1979) in an epilogue. The North German landscape photographer Günter Pump travelled in the footsteps of Jules Verne and has recreated the poetry of the travel route through Schleswig-Holstein, which can still be felt today, in expressive photographs. Frank Trende, born in 1963, is the author of numerous publications on Schleswig-Holstein regional studies and cultural and literary history.
