What is in a Jewish name? This question arises for anyone who ventures into the broad field of Jewish names. What makes Jewish names special? Why is it necessary to engage with them? What background can grant them a special status within the system of personal names? It is primarily the history of their origin that distinguishes Jewish surnames from other surnames. A history closely linked to the fate that awaited Jews in the diaspora. Especially in Germany, looking back is often not easy. Yet it is the centuries of shared history that made Germany the place of origin for most Jewish surnames. For 69 percent of all Jewish surnames, German is the linguistic source. This work examines the development and peculiarities of Jewish names.
