The Nazi regime abruptly ended his career and forced the beloved performer to flee across Europe. Once adored by millions, singer and film star Joseph Schmidt died in Swiss exile on November 16, 1942, at the age of just 38. Alfred A. Fassbind compellingly narrates the poignant story of one of the most remarkable voices of the last century, free from the legends and dubious anecdotes that accompanied Schmidt during his lifetime. The biography offers a glimpse into Joseph Schmidt as a person and presents the image of a unique artist in a dark time. The book served as one of the foundations for the novel "Der Sänger" by Lukas Hartmann.
