The Frankfurt theater photographer Abisag Tüllmann (1935-1996) has bequeathed her photographic documentation of Beuys' Titus Andronicus /Iphigenie, which the artist performed on May 25, 1969 during experimenta at Frankfurt's Theater am Turm, to the Frankfurt Museum für Moderne Kunst as a coherent work. In collaboration with the curator there, Mario Kramer, we are publishing this photographic collective work in book form for the first time. The action Titus Andronicus /Iphigenie is of particular significance in the work of Joseph Beuys. It is the only action by the artist that was conceived for the experiential space of the theater and refers to plays - Titus Andronicus by William Shakespeare and Iphigenie auf Tauris by Goethe - and one of two actions in which Beuys acted with a living animal.
