The successful catalog for the exhibition at the MAK in Vienna 2015/16 is dedicated to Josef Frank (1885-1967), one of the most significant Austrian architects of the 20th century. In addition to his groundbreaking architectural work, the focus is particularly on a designer to whom international design still owes important impulses today: As a "contemporary" architect and "designer," Frank represented a pragmatic design approach that prioritized social experiences over formal qualities. Today, Frank's ideas of unpretentious and straightforward functionality, aimed at an independent, enlightened bourgeois culture of living beyond stylistic dogmas and fashionable conventions, seem more relevant than ever.
