Jonas Carex, fifty years old, art dealer and writer, returns to Fribourg after thirty years, burned out. In search of his lost homeland, he wanders from bar to bar, from brothel to brothel, from church to church. He is haunted by memories of the teachers and priests from back then. They allowed him, coming from a strict Calvinist upbringing, to explore philosophy, God, and Catholic mysticism. There, he reunites with his childhood friend.
