The third volume of the complete works of the holy church teacher of mysticism contains "The Song of Love." John of the Cross composed the song freely, using motifs from the biblical Song of Songs. It is considered one of the highest poetic creations in world literature. Later, he presented a more sober prose interpretation, always aware that no rational explanation can capture the intensity of the poetic statement. The annotated version of the "Song" was completed by June 1586 at the latest, when John of the Cross presented it to the venerable Mother Ana de Jesus. This work is one of the highlights of an ancient tradition that sees the "Song of Songs" as the center of theology—because of its revelation: the bridal love between God and humanity. As a glorification of the Christian mystery, the work remains as fresh and enriching as it was upon its release.
