Johann Michael Sailer (1751-1832)

Johann Michael Sailer (1751-1832), the important theologian and later Bishop of Regensburg, had an impact on his time not only through his numerous writings and his university teaching activities, but also through his circle of friends. Throughout his life, Sailer maintained close ties with relatives, students, colleagues and friends: through extensive correspondence, travelling and visits throughout the German-speaking world. Konrad Baumgartner, a long-time Sailer researcher, traces these encounters: with Sailer's family, with Ignaz Heinrich von Wessenberg, Friedrich Carl von Savigny, Clemens Brentano, Joseph Görres, Matthias Claudius and many other personalities. The result is a picture of Sailer with depth of focus and great vibrancy.
