Conservative, Liberal, Reactionary? New Perspectives on the Osnabrück Mayor and Hanoverian Interior Minister Johann Carl Bertram Stüve. Johann Carl Bertram Stüve is today among the forgotten politicians of the 19th century. As the long-serving mayor of the city of Osnabrück and interior minister of the Kingdom of Hanover (1848-1850), he was initially regarded as a liberal in the 1830s, advocating for the emancipation of peasants and the Hanoverian state constitution. His opposition to the unilateral repeal of the constitution by Ernst August in 1837 made him known throughout Germany. When Stüve became an opponent of the majority of the Frankfurt National Assembly after 1848, which demanded a small German national state under Prussian leadership, this led to his discrediting by Prussian historiography. The conference proceedings re-examine central stages of Stüve's life and work, as well as his political and personal convictions, and provide a summary of the existing research on Stüve. Contents include: Nicolas Rügge: Seeking practical results rather than principles. Stüve as Hanoverian Interior Minister (1848-1850). Dietmar von Reeken: Reconstructing the historical consciousness of a person - Johann Carl Bertram Stüve and his historical thinking.
