With the #Blacklivesmatter! demonstrations of 2020 and their political activities since then, the Afro-Austrian communities have drawn increased attention to themselves. Originating primarily from student and asylum migration, they now form a lively, culturally differentiated and socially heterogeneous scene. Despite the equality requirement in the constitution and the political rights that have been fought for, Black people are still confronted with racism on an individual, institutional and structural level. Why this persistent contradiction? Looking back at antiquity, the Middle Ages, the early modern period and the 20th century - including the years of National Socialism - this book offers the most comprehensive overview to date of the history of African immigration to Vienna and Austria, the reactions of the majority society and the formation of an Afro-Austrian diaspora. A standard work on which younger historians will build.
