Hermann Hesse, born on July 2, 1877, in Calw/Württemberg as the son of a Baltic German missionary and the daughter of a Württemberg Indologist, died on August 9, 1962, in Montagnola near Lugano. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946 and the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in 1955. After completing an apprenticeship as a bookseller, he became a freelance writer in 1904, initially in Gaienhofen by Lake Constance and later in Ticino. He is one of the most renowned German authors of the 20th century.
