Jean-Luc Godard

At a moment in media history when film no longer appears only in cinema but in all media, this volume takes the work of French director Jean-Luc Godard as the starting point for a many-voiced reflection on the histories and futures of cinema.Arguably more than any other director, Godard has sought to write the history of cinema in the medium itself, for example in his monumental film essay Histoire(s) du cinéma. And more than any other director, Godard has repeatedly posed the question of what comes after cinema: how the history of art will continue after this "invention without a future," as Louis Lumière once put it. At the same time, Godard ascribes a special role of historical witness to cinema in the 20th and 21st centuries, which gives his work a relevance far beyond the horizon of a history of art.
