While rock and roll fans in Berlin in 1958 are enthusiastically enjoying themselves and jazz lovers are experiencing unforgettable evenings at the legendary Studio 22, the newly promoted Chief Inspector Otto Kappe must deal with less pleasant matters: the fire in a single-family home has cost the life of its owner, Ronald Roeder. The fire was deliberately set. Otto Kappe's investigative instincts make him doubt whether the charred body is truly that of Ronald Roeder. Roeder had fled from the East a few years earlier, but no information is to be expected from the Eastern authorities. This prompts Otto Kappe's uncle Hermann, a long-serving Chief Inspector, to get involved. In a not entirely legal manner, nephew and uncle delve into Roeder's past life. Author Jan Eik develops this story with great care.
