Janosch, born in 1931 in Zaborze/Upper Silesia, completed an apprenticeship as a blacksmith and locksmith after the war. Following his resettlement, he worked as a laborer in a textile factory and began his artistic career in Munich in the 1950s. He has since become internationally renowned as an illustrator, storyteller, and novelist, with over a hundred of his own books for children and adults. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the Prix Jeunesse, the Prix Danube, and the German Youth Literature Prize for picture books. Janosch lives and works in Tenerife.
