Product details

A comprehensive look at the life and work of the famous exceptional typographer. The richly illustrated catalogue is published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name, which will be presented at the Buch- und Schriftmuseum in Leipzig from 19 March to 1 September 2019. The furious transformation of writing and reading in the digital environment brings with it a strong interest in the history of typography. In recent decades in particular, this has been accompanied by a rediscovery of the classics of typography from the 1920s - and at the same time has a catalytic effect on the reception of the typographer, book and poster designer Jan Tschichold (1902 -1974), whose estate is preserved in the German Book and Type Museum in Leipzig. Although he never worked at the Bauhaus himself, the Leipzig-born typographer and book designer Jan Tschichold is considered one of the most important representatives of Bauhaus typography. His designs are classics of graphic design and continue to inspire today. This publication embeds Tschichold's famous works from the 1920s for the first time in detail in his biography as a designer, which is characterised by numerous breaks. In this way, the book enriches the reception of Jan Tschichold with essential aspects, virtually brushing them against the grain. The focus is on the entire typographer's life, so rich in contradictory new beginnings - from the Leipzig sign painter to the "New" Typographer and the Penguin books to the overall graphic appearance of LaRoche. Tschichold's flight from Germany in 1933 lends additional weight to Mortali's design somersaults.
