Already as little boy the orphan Jakob Hassler comes into the care of the Black Forest captain Ridinger. Hardly of age he takes over the direction of a risky rafting trip on the Rhine. Quickly he gets into a whirlpool of power, envy, and intrigues. In great danger he makes a momentous decision that will shape his further life. The author takes the reader on an exciting journey through time - into the valleys of the Black Forest and along the great, raging river, the Rhine. It was the Black Forest raftsmen of the late Middle Ages who, with their long journeys down the Rhine, helped to further open up the Western European cultural area and at the same time to connect it more closely.
