Since 10,000 animals are buried in animal cemeteries every year, J. Neijenhuis proposes a corresponding liturgy with which clergy, but also lay people, can conduct an animal funeral at the request of grieving animal owners. In these animal funerals, the pastoral dimension is in the foreground. W. Jones is concerned with enhancing the solemnity for masses. Melismatic chants are said to increase solemnity. J. Neijenhuis critically examines Henning Theissen's account of perceiving God's presence, which takes an aesthetic approach. I. Scheitler explores language and thought forms in the song "Ein Lämmlein geht und trägt die Schuld" (A little lamb goes and bears the guilt), which shaped the later pietistic expression of piety. Chr. Henzel looks at Emil Neumann's ideas on a possible practice of liturgical psalm singing with congregational participation. A. Marti elaborates on quality issues in hymnody. He builds on the working paper of the International Association for Hymnology (IAH) on the topic published in this volume. A project outline for a work on Porst's hymnal is the first article in a series in which hymnological dissertations are to be presented in brief form in future in order to promote scholarly exchange. Literature reports on liturgy and hymnology as well as strophic and personal indexes round off the yearbook.
