Product details

At 28 years old, Raoul de Jong meets his Surinamese father for the first time. They speak similarly, move alike, and both believe in miracles. Then Raoul's father tells him a story that he can't shake off: one of their ancestors, a medicine man, was able to transform into a jaguar. Although his father advises against it, Raoul embarks on a quest to the land of his ancestors. His journey takes him through the humid streets of Paramaribo, deep into the Amazon rainforest, and back to the Netherlands, where he performs a seven-day ritual in his apartment. Slowly, the young writer unravels an epic tale that spans four continents and five centuries. Supported by a voodoo priestess, freedom fighters, and authors of forbidden books, he travels through deep darkness back into the light.
