Product details
The "Griechische Culturgeschichte" will first be situated against the scientific-historical and social horizon of its time of origin, then individual objects, leitmotifs, and views will be examined in more detail, and finally Burckhardt's approach to cultural history will be examined from current perspectives of classical studies. Burckhardt always styled himself as an outsider of the historians' guild, and the "Griechische Culturgeschichte" was accordingly critically received by some early recipients. Nevertheless, it cannot be overlooked that the work made scholarly reference to current professional developments as well as reflecting contemporary social and political currents. One aim of the present volume is to gain a better understanding of how, in which selection and weighting Burckhardt took up and processed such influences.
