Island: Trekking Klassiker

The five routes presented have established themselves as Iceland's classics. The Laugavegur (53 km), the most famous trek on Iceland, leads from the highland oasis Landmannalaugar through colourful rhyolite mountains and barren sand and lava deserts in four daily stages to Þórsmörk. Deep gorges, rushing waterfalls and glittering tongues of ice characterise the demanding mountain hike over Fimmvörðuháls (25 km, 1 to 2 days). The Kjalvegur (48 km, 3 to 4 days), an easy tour for beginners, winds its way through the western highlands at the foot of the Langjökull ice cap. Huge table mountains and shield volcanoes accompany the hiker on Öskjuvegur (97 km), which opens up the vast East Icelandic lava wilderness of Ódáðahraun.
