The selection that Günter Eich himself made from his work shortly before his death collects poems, radio plays and prose from a period of over forty years.Eich, one of the most important poets of the postwar period, compiled the reading pieces from the point of view of one who observes the effect of one's own work, considers the reader's reactions, and responds to them: he omits what is quoted again and again, aphoristically abbreviated, as if the keyword were enough to communicate, as if the essence of an entire poetic work could be named with one line.
