Interweaving Histories

By examining the itineraries of specific Indian and Swiss actors traveling between India and Switzerland during the first half of the twentieth century, this book explores the history of cultural relations between the two countries. The itineraries studied include those of Frieda Hauswirth, who sought ways to contribute to the Indian freedom struggle; Eva Lombard and Elisabeth Petitpierre, who traveled to India to practice medicine and save lives; Jakob Urner, a missionary who developed a strong interest in Lingayat religious literature; Selvaraj Yesudian, who collaborated with the esotericist Elisabeth Haich to teach a unique form of yoga in Switzerland; and Lizelle Reymond, who published a widely read book recounting her encounter with the samkhya master Sri Anirvan.
