Interlaken Monastery and Castle

The Augustinian double monastery in Interlaken was founded in the 12th century and quickly flourished. After the Reformation, Berne, as an expanding city-state, took over as its successor, established a bailiwick and a hospital, rebuilt, demolished and created anew. What has been preserved is an ensemble of buildings of exceptional historical significance.
On the basis of extensive building history and source studies, this richly illustrated volume deals with the varied structural development of the monastery and palace complex over a period of nine centuries. This includes the latest restorations and the results of archaeological excavations. Last but not least, the work provides an insight into the practice of monument conservation in the Canton of Bern. Individual topics are examined in more detail by means of comparisons with other buildings and placed in a larger context.
