An integrated and optimized smart grid cannot be achieved without a secure communication network. Due to the vast scope of the power grid, the variety of technologies used, and the limited communication bandwidth, monitoring applications for the smart grid are still often only weakly secured. Attackers can potentially alter measurements or inject false commands into the network. A novel method based on dynamic secrets and encryption with secret keys generates a series of dynamic secrets over the communication network, which are used to create secret keys for data encryption. The generation of dynamic secrets occurs frequently, and no attacker can compromise the network over an extended period, even if they know a secret key. The method is secure against eavesdropping, malicious communication injections, man-in-the-middle attacks, replay attacks, impersonation attacks, and selected-plaintext attacks. The security analysis and performance evaluation can be applied to the communication between monitoring and control nodes of various smart grid applications.
