This book is a collection of extended versions of lectures delivered at the international KES summit on the Covid-19 challenge. The focus of the book is on technological, economic, and social developments aimed at combating the effects of global and local disasters, as well as how the recovery from Covid can be leveraged to build more resilient and sustainable communities and industries while improving the environment. The global challenges of human-induced climate change are also discussed. The chapters address strengthening the resilience of cities and communities through energy independence, food production, resilient housing and buildings, human health, and smart systems, for example, for forecasting and predictions.
