Product details

As expansive, often walk-in works of art, environments invite visitors to actively engage with exhibitions and enable unique, immersive experiences at the interface of art, architecture and design. To date, research has focussed primarily on the works of male Western artists that emerged from happenings and the Fluxus movement. The exhibition In Other Spaces. Environments by Women Artists 1956-1976 expands the canon: With 11 female artists from three generations from Asia, Europe, North and South America - Judy Chicago, Lygia Clark, Laura Grisi, Aleksandra Kasuba, Lea Lublin, Marta Minujín, Tania Mouraud, Maria Nordman, Nanda Vigo, Faith Wilding and Tsuruko Yamazaki - it illustrates for the first time the elementary role of women in the development of this art form.
In view of their experimental nature, most of the environments were dismantled or destroyed immediately after their presentation. The detailed and replicas, which are based on archive photos, construction plans and material lists, are presented here for the first time in a catalogue. The publication is conceived as a fundamental reference work on the historiography of environments and contains a wealth of material that traces the history(ies) of the term as well as essays by leading scholars and extensive bibliographies on the artists and environments shown in the exhibition.
