It is the last year of the past millennium. The narrator has just found her home in the far north, in a landscape surrounded by endless space and tranquility, where everything she wants to tell lies - when she receives an invitation to the south: a six-month scholarship in Rome. Rome in the fever of the millennium, noise, exhaust fumes, streams of tourists. The Eternal City appears to her like a single monitor displaying a thousand images simultaneously. At first, she feels little welcome. Only in the parks of Villa Borghese, in front of Caravaggio's paintings in the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, and together with the sons who come to visit her, does she find moments of happiness. She brings the north into the Eternal City. However, she ultimately succumbs to the fascination of the south.
