For her entire life, London archaeologist Alexis Fielding has wished to learn more about her roots. However, her mother Sofia refuses to talk about her Greek family and childhood. At twenty-five, Alexis decides to take matters into her own hands and travels to Crete. In Sofia's hometown, she makes a shocking discovery: off the coast, directly across from the village of Plaka, lies the abandoned rocky island of Spinalonga, which housed one of the last European leper colonies until the 1960s. When Alexis meets an old friend of her mother's, she finally learns the entire tragic yet beautiful and touching story of her family, which is closely intertwined with the fate of the lepers on Spinalonga.
