Product details
In the fourth year of World War II, when the visions of the apocalyptic seer became a horrifying reality, Max Beckmann created lithographs in Amsterdam exile based on the Revelations of John. The drawings were smuggled into Germany and printed in a small edition along with the Luther text. Beckmann hand-colored five copies. The vision of the Apocalypse provided the artist with hope and comfort: "It seems that I am meant to live on." This edition of this book jewel contains the complete text, Beckmann's colored illustrations, and a foreword by Annette Schavan. "The end is near, the transformation is coming closer, what am I still doing here, so close to the sea?" Max Beckmann, Diaries 1940 - 1950.
