Traumatised people feel to a much greater extent than others as "multiple" personalities. Their self - consciously or unconsciously - disintegrates into different parts. This tried and tested and innovative approach shows how to work effectively with the self parts in psychotherapy. Who or what is the "I"? This question has preoccupied not only philosophers, but also the psychologists and psychotherapists since Sigmund Freud. The American psychologists Helen and John Watkins have found a therapeutically fruitful answer: The "I" is not a unit, it's made up of parts. Complexly traumatized patients radically experience this divided self. Their ego often virtually disintegrates into the most diverse sub-personalities. Perpetrator projects stand next to the injured small child, helper personalities coexist.
