Product details

The textbook covers manufacturing processes as well as measurement and testing techniques for producing workpieces made from metals, plastics, ceramics, and glass. Specifically, the manufacturing processes include casting technology, powder metallurgy, machining technology, separation and removal techniques, heat treatment, welding, soldering, bonding, assembly, laser technology, and additive manufacturing. In the area of measurement and testing technology, geometric measurement technology, surface measurement technology, and coordinate measurement technology are addressed. New measurement and testing techniques such as computed tomography (CT), image processing, and 3D digitization are also included. Following this, the material testing technology, component testing, and qualification of machine tools and robots are discussed. All sections are accompanied by well-explained drawings, photos, and microscopic images.

The appendix "Small Materials Science" initially conveys material properties such as density, modulus of elasticity, thermal conductivity, temperature conductivity, and loss factor with graphics covering all material groups. This is followed by the fundamentals of materials science for metals, covering topics like lattice structure, equilibrium states, phase transformations, diffusion processes, hardening, and deformation. This appendix serves as an additional aid for better understanding of the manufacturing processes.

In the 9th edition, there is a new chapter titled "Measurements on Machine Tools." This chapter highlights the various relationships between machining quality and machine properties, as well as revealing weaknesses through measurements. Furthermore, updates have been made in all chapters. Notably, the testing of the melt in casting technology, the production of metal powders, the design of composite components, and the testing methods for environmental influences have been emphasized. The new standard DIN EN ISO 6892-1:2017 "Metallic Materials - Tensile Test" has been revised with extensive changes to the formula symbols.
