Compass for an ethic of mindfulness. On some topics, in normal times, we have a code of conduct and usually know without hesitation what the right behaviour is. But in interaction with others, we forget. In this world full of conflict and disharmony, how can we face the challenges of life? How can we look at the world, whatever happens, with an alert eye? Instead of making life's circumstances worse, we can create new and better conditions. By developing our personality, we learn how to face the challenges. And we recognise which tasks we should fulfil in this life. What can help us to do this? A modern chivalric ethic of mindfulness! For millennia there have been such universal ethical principles as: Justice and fairness, balance and moderation, courage, wisdom and generosity. Not only in the Christian West were there orders of knights and a courtly culture, but also in the Ancient Near East and in Japan in the Middle Ages people lived according to the principles of a chivalric ethic. If we look at this epoch, we naturally also see cruelty and narrow-mindedness there. An ethical attitude directed towards the future in global terms no longer has any place for it. Instead, new qualities are added: respect for all life and universal responsibility - reminding us, for example, to help all people - regardless of their gender, skin colour, nationality, income, sexual preference or creed. Accordingly, how about being guided less by the thought: what do I want, what do I need, how can I benefit from the situation? But rather, what do I contribute to a better life and a better world? In the spirit of Armanda Gorman, who said in her poem for Joe Biden's inauguration: 'Our path leads us not back to what was, but ahead to what is to become.' The importance of chivalric aspiration is also that we face life's challenges. That we face the odds and strive as best we can to unfold more and more of our inherent potential.
