For many decades, "In Search of Lost Time" has been read merely as a social portrait of the Belle Époque, a key novel depicting the frivolous Parisian upper class around 1900. However, it addresses deeper issues: the inextricable connection of the individual to society and their dependence on its development. Proust captures the subtle tremors and influences at the level of the subconscious – and Bernd-Jürgen Fischer's translation makes this particularly tangible in German. His contemporary translation takes into account that Proust also reflects on the impact of time on language.
