The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is caused by SARS-CoV-2 and represents the pathogen of a potentially deadly illness that is of great importance to public health worldwide. Extensive measures have been implemented to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 from person to person in order to contain the current outbreak. Special attention and efforts to protect or reduce transmission should be directed towards vulnerable populations such as children, healthcare providers, and the elderly. In this overview, we highlight the symptoms, epidemiology, transmission, pathogenesis, phylogenetic analysis, and future directions for containing the spread of this deadly disease. Common human coronaviruses, including types 229E, NL63, OC43, and HKU1, typically cause mild to moderate illnesses of the upper respiratory tract, such as colds.
