Lili moves into a nursing home to support her care-dependent husband. Her family is looking for someone to visit her regularly and help her with daily tasks. The first-person narrator says, "I am that someone." She lives in the same house as Lili's granddaughter Sophie, and together they are raising her eight-year-old son Eric. However, she has found a job in a distant city and is now hesitant to confess to them that she will soon be moving away. She takes care of the clever, know-it-all Eric and the constantly complaining Lili. She engages in fleeting conversations with a waiter who, like her, comes from elsewhere. At the same time, she struggles to accept that her ten-years-younger sister is no longer a child. She grapples with the fading friendship with Sophie and the bleakness of the nursing home, caught between tranquilizers and card games. When Lili eventually passes away, the young women dare to start anew. With a realistic perspective and poetic language, Meral Kureyshi illuminates the lives of women across generations and unfolds a panorama of family life in contemporary times.
