In 24 songs, the "Iliad" describes the final phase of the ten-year battle for Troy. At the centre of the broadly based dramatic plot is Achilles, who was injured by Agamemnon in his honour. Although Homer drew from the rich fund of oral tradition, he concentrated all compositional and stylistic means on a central motif, the wrath of Achilleus, so that even the "Iliad" is a poem of surprising individuality.
