Dostoevsky's novel "The Gambler" - set in the fictional German "Roulettenburg," written from his own experience, often translated (especially skillfully by Elisabeth Markstein at Reclam), filmed several times - captivates through the breathlessness of the plot, the multitude of characters (including an old lady who becomes addicted to gambling and a femme fatale) - and its shimmering polyphony. This can now be followed closely in the Russian original; thoroughly annotated and provided with an in-depth epilogue by the language-didactic editor couple, which leaves no questions unanswered about this fascinating novel.
