Michel Pêcheux (1938-1983) is less than a marginal figure in German-language debates on critical social theory. This volume - the first collection of texts in German - documents his thinking between Marxism and psychoanalysis. As an employee and student of Louis Althusser, he continues to write Althusser's theory of ideology from a perspective of liberation in his critique of dominant linguistics and in his engagement with Foucault, Pêcheux develops his own theory of the materiality of discourse. His texts on the connection between ideological theory and discourse analysis, on ideological struggles and the emancipatory potentials revealed in their fractures, do not merely form part of the forgotten legacy of critical Marxisms, which is hereby made accessible.
