Ick kieke, staune, wundre mir

The literary emergence of the "Berliner Schnauze" Berlin has been shaped by immigration and has utilized the development of a unique dialect from all languages, incorporating it into a metropolitan dialect commonly referred to as "Berliner Schnauze." From the streets, maidservants' rooms, and backyards, the Berlin dialect made its way onto the stages of melodramatic theaters and soon into the writing rooms of poets. What began with Adolf Glassbrenner's "Eckensteher" was taken up by Theodor Fontane, Erich Mühsam, Max Herrmann-Neisse, and even Gottfried Benn. Kurt Tucholsky emerged as a master of colloquial occasional poetry, and Erich Weinert continued to write in the Berlin dialect from exile against the National Socialists. A dialect became socially acceptable with all its cheekiness and obscenity. This first documentary anthology addresses this.
