Product details
Born in the GDR in 1956, painter Roland Eber has become an undisputed star of the international art scene at the beginning of the 21st century. Even at eighty years old, his creative power remains unbroken. In 2036, he returns from New York to Berlin to celebrate his birthday there. Journalist Alice Müller, who has written an extensive report on Eber for the occasion, persuades him to embark on a biographical journey, during which Eber unfolds his life in the GDR before her: his early childhood talent, his school and military years, his studies in Leipzig, and his work as a visual artist in East Berlin. However, he also addresses the difficulties that arose for his life and work due to reunification, the necessity of adapting to the production and consumption conditions of art in capitalism. The loss of the figure, which had been a central element in Eber's work until then, becomes a sign of a fundamental loss of trust in humanity's ability, both as individuals and as a community, to build a just society, which for Eber still means a socialist society.
