At the age of fifteen, Sal notices for the first time that Grandma's skin color is black. When schoolmates themselves ask her about her foreign appearance, her mother advises her, "Tell them you're from India." In her search for her past, Sal encounters a wall of silence. Eventually, she is able to persuade her mother, grandmother and her brother to tell the true story of her family.
