Society - Power - Architecture
Monica Bonvicini (born 1965 in Venice, lives and works in Berlin) engages with public and private spaces, where existing gender relations and social orders are manifested in their aesthetics and architecture. In her expansive, often provocative works, the artist focuses on such power structures. Her internationally acclaimed work has received numerous awards, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale (1999), the National Gallery Prize for Young Art from the National Museums in Berlin (2005), and the Oskar Kokoschka Prize (2020). It oscillates between an object language drawn from the commercial realm and an aesthetic of cool elegance influenced by minimalism.
The Neue Nationalgalerie is dedicating a solo exhibition to the artist in 2022/23 in the glass hall of the iconic museum building by Mies van der Rohe. Bonvicini fundamentally alters the exhibition space through a large architectural intervention, corresponding to a feminist act of reclaiming. With playful irony and diverse historical, political, and social references, the artist enables a new experience of the building. The publication accompanying the exhibition includes installation views and images of the works, an introduction by the curators, and essays by various authors.
Exhibition: Monica Bonvicini, Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin, November 25, 2022, to May 7, 2023.
