For years, the media has been presenting us with this distorted image of the utterly perfect body, creating a dangerous ideal. Those who aspire to this unnatural beauty standard often slip into an eating disorder. Bulimia is one of them; it primarily affects young women whose pathological fear of gaining weight has led to binge-purge behavior. The illness is rarely recognized early, as the eating behavior of bulimics is often normal to controlled and reduced, with binge eating and subsequent vomiting occurring in complete secrecy. Since the illness is still largely unknown in public and bulimia continues to be treated as a taboo subject, those affected often encounter misunderstanding.
