The independent system of humoral medicine is a defining foundational element of Traditional European Natural Medicine (TEN). The theory of the four humors is the concept of a systemic medicine that focuses on the functionality of the organism and its pathological changes. The structural components (tissues, organs) are viewed as tools for realizing these functions on physical, mental, and spiritual levels. Both the formation and regeneration of body tissues, as well as the regulation and, if necessary, reorganization of organ functions, are the results of the principles of the four cardinal humors: blood (Sanguis), phlegm (Phlegma), yellow bile (Cholera), and black bile (Melancholera). However, these do not exist as substantial bodily fluids; rather, each of these humors represents the principles of action in a defined ratio.
