How does religion come into being?

In an obituary of Alfred North Whitehead, F. S. C. Northrop wrote: "Few scholars, apart from Leibniz and Aristotle, have touched so many fields with such originality, accuracy and depth. Religion in the Making, the original English title, consists of four lectures given by Whitehead in 1926. In the same perspective as he had analysed the development and impact of modern science in the Lowell Lectures held a year earlier, published under the title Science and the Modern World, Whitehead pursued in How Does Religion Come Into Being? the aims of "presenting a concise analysis of the many factors in human nature which, in their interaction, give rise to a religion, presenting the inevitable change of religion in the context of the change of knowledge and, in particular, directing attention to it.
