Each chapter begins with an introductory double-page spread. Photos, images, and graphics serve as prompts to highlight central aspects and themes of the chapter, allowing for both factual and problem-oriented entry points. Deliberately, guiding questions have been omitted to encourage discussions with students based on the materials.

The subchapters focus on a central theme. A brief text at the beginning of each chapter introduces the topic and concludes with a problematization. Numerous varied tasks outline a possible teaching pathway. HORIZONTE explicitly positions itself as a workbook.

Central historical methods are introduced in an age-appropriate and gradual manner. Through training boxes, students learn essential foundations of historical work that they can refer back to repeatedly. Additionally, training boxes provide hints and phrasing aids to assist students in solving tasks. These training boxes also allow for targeted individual support and internal differentiation.

At the end of each chapter, the key content is reviewed, and important dates and terminology are highlighted. A timeline and symbols help students reorganize their knowledge. Using a questionnaire, students can self-evaluate their competencies, and teachers can utilize the questionnaires for constructive feedback or individual support.
