Since the shift towards competence orientation, voices have emerged questioning whether the current concept of competence can encompass all areas of a comprehensive understanding of education. Education should not only be seen as preparation for a (performance) society. According to its dual character, education must also pursue the non-instrumental goal of personal development and self-determination. This study clarifies to what extent the current concept of competence meets a multidimensional understanding of education and to what extent it requires expansion. Through a phenomenological-anthropological analysis, a person-centered understanding of competence is developed, followed by a complementary support model. The phenomenology of Edith Stein serves as a guiding principle and can be situated within a phenomenological educational science. A pathway is outlined on how societal educational expectations can be connected with personal development.
